This style of blade is a traditional Japanese utility knife. It’s compact design and integral handle allow for tough tasks that require precision. It is a popular style with woodworkers, book binders and leatherworkers.
The bi metal construction and single bevel geometry of this blade are what makes it unique. Hardened tool steel is forge welded together with iron to create an extremely tough tool. When sharpening, the iron is easier to remove material as it cannot be hardened, as well as providing a soft cladding to the steel which makes it less brittle. The geometry is similar to a chisel, allowing for very precise cuts.
True wrought iron (sometimes known as puddle iron or pig iron) was made the same way until the last century, where modern manufacturing technology has refined the process. It has unique and desirable properties and when etched, reveals a less homogenous and uniquely patterned alloy than modern metals.
This blade is designed for right handed individuals, left handed versions are beveled inversely.
The sheath is saddle stitched for toughness from hand painted Italian leather.
